The dryer continued to tumble and accept cycle settings, but clothes were not getting dry because there was no heat. When a dryer runs without heating, a failed heating element is one possible cause, though airflow problems can also affect drying and put extra strain on the appliance. Lint buildup and a restricted exhaust path reduce the air moving through the dryer. That restriction can contribute to overheating and damage to the heating system.

What We Did

We diagnosed the dryer and found that the heating element had no resistance and needed replacement. We also found heavy lint buildup inside the dryer, along with a long, kinked exhaust hose that was clogged with lint. We replaced the heating element with a new original Whirlpool part, shortened and cleaned the exhaust hose, and cleaned the dryer interior. The heating element produces the heat used to dry clothes, while clear airflow carries warm, damp air out of the dryer. Lint buildup can restrict that airflow and create a fire hazard, so clearing the dryer and exhaust path matters alongside replacing the failed part. We tested the dryer after the repair, and it operated properly.
