Quick Answer
The puddle's location is your best clue. Water under the crisper drawers or ice on the freezer floor usually points to a blocked defrost drain. Water behind the refrigerator is more likely to come from the ice maker or dispenser water supply.
Dry up the water, then watch where it returns. That tells you which checks are worth doing before you call for service.
Most Likely Causes
1. Blocked defrost drain
Defrost water normally runs through a drain to a pan beneath the refrigerator. Ice or debris can block that path, leaving water under the crisper drawers or a sheet of ice on the freezer floor. You can check a visible drain opening. A blockage behind a screwed panel needs service.
2. Leaking water supply, filter connection, or inlet valve
A water line or filter connection can leak behind or beneath the refrigerator. The water inlet valve controls flow to the ice maker and dispenser and can also leak or fail to close fully. Notice whether the puddle grows during an ice maker fill or after dispensing water. Check only connections you can see without moving the refrigerator. Hidden-line and valve repairs are technician work.
3. Door not closing or sealing
A door held open by food or a dirty door gasket lets humid air in. You may see moisture inside and frost around the door. Clear the obstruction and wipe the gasket. A torn gasket or misaligned door may need repair.
4. Damaged or displaced drain pan
The pan under the refrigerator catches defrost water so it can evaporate. If it cracks or shifts, water can reach the floor. A puddle beneath the cabinet with no ice inside or visible supply leak fits this pattern. Leave pan access and repair to a technician.
5. Dispenser drip or ice maker overflow
A few drops in the dispenser tray after use can be normal. Water repeatedly running down the door or ice building up around the ice maker points to a water-system problem. Note when it happens rather than opening either assembly.
Safe Checks to Do First
- Dry the floor and the inside bottom of the refrigerator. Watch for the first place fresh water appears.
- Look for ice on the freezer floor and water beneath the crisper drawers. If the freezer drain hole is visible without removing a panel, check for loose debris or ice. Do not dig into the drain or use a hair dryer or boiling water.
- Check that both doors close fully. Move food away from the door, then wipe the gaskets and the surfaces they touch.
- If you recently changed the water filter, check that it is seated as the owner's manual directs. Look for drips at any visible filter connection.
- Look at any easily reached water line and connection. If water is actively leaking, close the refrigerator's water shutoff valve if you can reach it safely. Do not pull a heavy refrigerator forward to hunt for the leak.
What the Symptoms Usually Mean
Water pooled under the crisper drawers
A blocked defrost drain is the usual suspect, especially if ice is also forming at the bottom of the freezer.
Freezer leaking water onto the floor
Ice across the freezer bottom most often points to a blocked defrost drain. Water behind the refrigerator instead suggests an ice maker supply leak. If food is thawing, follow the freezer not freezing checks too.
Water behind the refrigerator
On a refrigerator connected to a water supply, a line, connection, or inlet valve is the most likely source. The leak can continue even when nobody uses the dispenser.
Water along with poor cooling
A door that does not seal can cause both moisture and warm temperatures. If the door closes properly but the compartment stays warm, use the refrigerator not cooling guide to narrow down the separate cooling problem.
When to Stop DIY and Call a Technician
Stop if water is near a cord or outlet. Do not touch a wet plug. Shut off power at the breaker if you can do so safely. Also call if the floor leak continues after the water supply is off, drain ice returns, or finding the source requires moving the refrigerator or removing a screwed panel.
If the refrigerator cannot keep food cold, address that promptly as well. A technician can trace hidden leaks, clear an inaccessible drain, and test the water inlet valve. Arrange refrigerator repair service rather than opening the cabinet or testing electrical parts yourself.
From Our Repair Log
October 2026: Sub-Zero Refrigerator Leaking Water. Valve Repair in Raleigh
Our technician diagnosed the refrigerator and found that the water inlet valve was not closing fully. Water continued flowing into the ice maker, where it froze and blocked the water's path, causing water to spill behind the refrigerator.
