Washing Machine Not Draining? What to Check First

Washer Not Draining

Quick Answer

When a washing machine will not empty water, a blockage in the drain path or a failed pump is usually to blame. A kinked hose is easy to check, and water backing up at the standpipe points to the house drain instead.

Look for a backup, check the visible hose, then try Drain & Spin once. If the washer empties but still will not spin, the drain may not be the problem.

Most Likely Causes

Blockage in the washer's drain path

Lint or a small item can obstruct the pump or drain hose. The pump may hum while water leaves slowly or stays in the tub. You can inspect the visible hose, but reaching an internal blockage requires opening the machine.

Failed drain pump

The tub stays full, and the pump may be silent or hum without moving water. Those sounds can also come from a blockage, so they do not prove the pump needs replacing.

Kinked drain hose or clogged household drain

A pinched hose restricts flow. Water spilling from the standpipe or backing up into a nearby sink points to the household drain. Check only the hose you can see without moving the washer.

Door, lid, or control problem

On some models, a door or lid lock fault interrupts the cycle. Repeated stops, especially when the tub sometimes empties normally, can point to a lock or control problem rather than a steady blockage. Check that the door or lid closes normally. Pump, lock, and electrical diagnosis are technician work.

Safe Checks to Do First

  1. Look for water on the floor or backing up at the standpipe. Stop the cycle if you see either.
  2. Straighten an obvious kink in the visible drain hose without pulling out the washer or disconnecting the hose.
  3. Check that clothing is not caught in the door or lid.
  4. If there is no leak and the controls respond, run Drain & Spin once. Watch the standpipe if you can see it.
  5. After a power outage, cancel the interrupted cycle, wait a few minutes, then try Drain & Spin once.

Leave the pump filter closed while the tub is full unless your owner's manual gives a user-accessible draining procedure and you can contain the water safely.

What the Symptoms Usually Mean

Water stays in the tub and the washer will not spin

Most washers will not reach full-speed spin with water still in the tub, so a drain problem is the first suspect. If it empties but still will not spin, see washer not spinning.

Pump hums, but water does not leave

This most often points to an obstruction at the pump or a pump that cannot move water. Stop the cycle rather than letting it hum.

No pump sound during Drain & Spin

A pump that is not running is the likely issue. It may have failed, or the washer may not be sending it power.

Washer will not drain after a power outage

An interrupted cycle is the first possibility. If the one retry fails, the outage may be coincidental and the drain system needs diagnosis.

When to Stop DIY and Call a Technician

Stop if Drain & Spin leaves water behind, the washer repeatedly stops mid-cycle, or you see a leak or electrical damage. Do not reach for a plug near water or move a water-filled washer. If water backs up from the standpipe, have the household drain cleared. Otherwise, schedule washer repair service to find out whether the restriction, pump, lock, or controls are at fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run another load with water still in the washer?

No. Another load can add water to an already full tub and make a leak or backup worse. Wait until the drain problem is resolved.

Can I put drain cleaner in the washing machine?

No. Chemical drain cleaner can damage washer parts and leave hazardous residue for anyone who later works on the drain system.

Can an overloaded washer cause a drain problem?

An overloaded tub is more likely to disrupt spinning than draining. If water remains after you remove the load, do not assume the load was the only problem.

Is a little water left in my washer normal?

Some water can remain out of sight in the washer's internal plumbing. Water standing visibly in the tub after a completed cycle is not normal.

What does my washer's drain error code mean?

Codes differ by brand and model. Write down the exact code and look it up in your model's owner's manual rather than replacing a part based on a generic code list.

What should I tell the repair technician about my washer?

Have the model number ready and note when the water remains, whether the pump makes a sound, and any displayed code. Those details help narrow down an intermittent problem.
