Cooktop Burner Clicks but Won't Light: What to Check

Cooktop Burner Won't Light

Quick Answer

When a gas cooktop burner clicks but won't light, check the burner cap first. A crooked cap, moisture from cleaning, or food in the burner ports can keep the gas from igniting. If those checks don't help, the spark electrode or gas supply may need service.

Turn the knob off before touching the burner. Clicking does not necessarily mean the problem burner is getting a spark.

Most Likely Causes

Burner cap is out of position

The cap directs gas toward the ignition point. If it was bumped or put back crooked, the burner may click without lighting. Reseating a removable cap is safe once it is cool.

Burner ports are wet or blocked

The ports are the small openings where gas exits. A boilover or recent cleaning can leave water or food in them. Cleaning and drying removable burner parts as your manual directs is a homeowner-safe check.

Spark electrode is dirty or damaged

The spark electrode ignites gas beside the burner. Residue may interfere with its spark, while a cracked or misplaced electrode needs service. You may hear clicking but see no spark at the affected burner.

Gas is not reaching the burner

If other burners light but this one does not, its valve or internal gas path could be at fault. If none light, the gas supply may be interrupted. Internal gas checks belong to a technician.

Ignition module has a fault

The ignition module supplies the sparks. Weak or missing sparks at several burners can point to it, though clicking alone does not confirm a module failure.

Safe Checks to Do First

  1. Turn the knob fully off. If you smell gas, do not use switches or flames. Leave the home and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
  2. Confirm you have a gas burner. If an induction zone won't heat instead, try a pan that a magnet sticks to. Induction does not use a flame or clicking gas ignition. For a radiant electric burner, see electric burner heating checks.
  3. When the burner is cool, lift off its removable cap and seat it flat in the correct position.
  4. If there was a spill, clean visible food from the ports with a soft brush. Remove a burner head only if your manual shows how. Let the parts dry completely, then put them back. Do not enlarge the ports.
  5. Gently wipe visible residue from the exposed spark electrode with a dry cloth. Do not bend it.
  6. If there is no gas odor, try lighting the burner once while watching for a spark at that burner. If it does not light promptly, turn it off rather than making repeated attempts.

What the Symptoms Usually Mean

One burner clicks but won't light

A misplaced cap or blocked ports are the usual suspects. If those are clear and dry, watch for a spark at that burner. On many cooktops, the click you hear could come from another burner.

Gas cooktop won't light on any burner

When every burner clicks but none lights, an interrupted gas supply is more likely than several caps failing at once. Stop testing burners and arrange service.

Burner lights but keeps clicking

Moisture near the electrode or an ignition switch fault can cause continued clicking. If it clicks with every knob off, stop using the cooktop and arrange service.

When to Stop DIY and Call a Technician

Stop after one brief failed test with a clean, dry, correctly seated burner. A damaged electrode, tripped breaker, or clicking with the knobs off also calls for cooktop repair service. For a gas odor, follow the exit steps above.

Opening the cooktop or working on gas valves, wiring, and ignition parts is technician work. Leave the burner off until the fault is identified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the other burners if one won't light?

If there is no gas odor and the other burners light and burn normally, you can generally use them while keeping the faulty burner off. Stop using the cooktop if you notice an unusual flame or smell.

Is it normal for other burners to spark when I turn one knob?

Yes. Many gas cooktops spark at multiple burners during ignition. That is why the clicking sound alone cannot tell you which burner is sparking.

Will a power outage keep my gas cooktop from lighting?

Many gas cooktops need electricity for their spark ignition. Check your model's manual for outage instructions rather than assuming it can be lit manually.

Should the flame be blue when the burner finally lights?

A steady blue flame is typical for natural gas. Persistent yellow flames, lifting flames, or soot call for service.

Can I wash gas burner caps in the dishwasher?

Check your owner's manual first. Some caps and finishes are not dishwasher-safe, and they must be completely dry before use.

Does a cooktop burner need to spark the whole time I cook?

Usually, sparking stops after the burner lights and the knob leaves the ignition position. Some models briefly re-spark if a flame goes out, so check your manual if the behavior is unfamiliar.
